  • What is a giclée art print?
The visual excellence of a giclée paper print is remarkably high, boasting stunning color saturation and definition that rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes. Undoubtedly, giclée prints stand as the closest replication of original artwork achievable today. Giclée Fine Art Prints, pronounced as "gee-clay," represent an exceptional category of archival-grade digital prints. Utilizing an ultra-fine inkjet printing process, these prints deliver images with intense color and vibrancy. The advanced digital reproduction technology employs light-fast and UV-resistant pigment-based inks, offering a broader spectrum of colors compared to standard printing methods. The outcome is a collection of beautiful digital reproductions that surpass the longevity of those produced through traditional commercial fine art printing techniques. Giclée inks adhere to an exceptionally high lightfast standard and are crafted for application on specially developed archival-quality papers. The result is a series of prints characterized by superb quality, unmatched vibrancy, and intricate detail, promising a lifespan extending well beyond a single generation. Although originating in America, the term "giclée" derives from the French verb meaning "to spray," alluding to the ink being sprayed onto the paper. Initially associated with fine art prints created on Iris printers in the early 1990s, the term has evolved to encompass any high-quality inkjet print. In the realm of galleries and print shops, it is frequently used to signify prints of such caliber.
  • What kind of fine art paper do you print on?
Cold Press Bright White artist paper is an acid-free 100% cotton rag paper with a bright white, textured surface. This 21 mil, 340gsm paper has an extremely high colour gamut and black density. The paper has a matte finish with almost no sheen. This complements the textured surface and exudes an artistic quality.
  • How do I take care of my art print?
CARE With care and prudence, giclée prints will last for an exceptionally long time. General Care: As with any valued fine art piece, it is recommended that your print be displayed in indirect lighting conditions and away from any contact with moisture. Using archival materials for mats, backings, and spacers, and museum quality framing and UV protected glass/plexiglass will add to the life of the print. The artwork should never directly touch the glass/plexiglass. Environment: Displayed and/or stored giclée prints require a stable environment. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can negatively affect the print. In the case of a giclee on paper with glass, condensation may form on the inside of the glass, creating conditions for mold or deterioration of the paper. Sunlight: Unlike original art, giclée prints contain UV treatments in the archival inks as well as the varnish or clear coat. Numerous tests have been conducted that indicate that giclée prints can withstand fading and deterioration due to direct and indirect sunlight. Some experts estimate that giclée prints can last up to 75 years without signs of decline. However, when selecting that perfect spot for displaying your artwork, it is best to keep them out of direct sunlight for the sake of longevity. Handling: It is always wise to handle any artwork with care. Damage to frames, glass, etc. can occur when moving art pieces. Additionally, touching the surface of the giclee may deposit natural oils from your skin that may have an adverse effect on the longevity of the surface of the painting. Cleaning: Much care should be taken in the cleaning of giclee artwork. Dust particles can be removed periodically with a light brush. If further cleaning is required, or for extensive cleaning and/or repair consult an art restoration professional.
  • Are all prints signed and number?
Before artwork goes to print, the printer and the artist work together to decide how many prints in the edition will be numbered, and how many will be reserved for the artist and the printer. Artist proofs (APs), printer proofs (PPs), and gallery proofs (GPs) are a part of the edition, signed by the artist, and are equally valuable as the numbered prints (sometimes more!). There are no multiple runs or editions. Your PP, AP, or GP is a part of this limited, first edition.
  • How do I unpack the print?
Your print is rolled into a sheet of kraft paper and sealed with tape. Locate the tab at one end of the tape and gently pull the tape from the kraft paper. Go slowly and be careful not to rip the paper or the print inside. Unroll the print from the kraft paper onto a flat surface. You may want to place a heavy object on each corner to help flatten the curled edges. The use of a utility knife or any other sharp tool to cut the tape and/or the paper is not recommended. Do not attempt to remove the print from the kraft paper without first removing the tape. Marc Travis Macleod is not responsible for prints damaged when unwrapping.
